Looking back on my childhood I have VERY fond memories of my Birthdays. I had big parties for those milestone birthdays ages 1, 5, 13, and 21. The other years we would do something special, my mom would cook my favorite meal at the time and for dessert I would order my favorite..Cherry Cheesecake, which I still get to this day. As a mother now I want to give those same type of memories to my boys. It's easy to forget that life is about the memories we create and not the material things we are given.
Just as when I was a kid we don't do birthday parties every year for the boys, but celebrate it some sort of special way. Last year we spent their birthday on the beach relaxing with family. This year we decided to celebrate Jackson's milestone of turning 5 years old. Finn just got lucky since he and Jackson share the same birthday.
The theme of the party was "Come Get Messy"! Both boys love doing art and in true boy style love to get messy so this was perfect. I started planning about six weeks or so before the party. I love making their invitations but this year it was going to be too much so I used this great local company babyBdesigns. This invitation set the tone for party...
I thought of some crafts for the kids to do such as; Necklace Making, Face Art, Painting, Visor Decorating, Cupcake Decorating and making Tie Dye shirts. Instead of giving each child a goodie bag I opted just to give them a nice handle bag with a Thank you attached so they can have something to tote their crafts in. I also added a flyer from a local company called PrintArtKids they specialize in making custom things from art. So if there was something from the party the parents really loved they could have it made into stationary, note pad or address labels...there are many possibilities that are great for gifts.
Now onto the FOOD!!! I love to entertain so preparing a party for over 50 people was not an issue but I did want the menu to consist of things that were easy to prepare, food I could be made ahead and cost effective.
* Chicken Hot Dogs &Turkey Sausage with sauerkraut and sauteed onion and peppers.
* Basil Pesto Pasta Salad (find this recipe in our latest Newsletter at O'Boy! Organic)
* Turkey Taco Salad
*Vegetarian Baked Beans
* Hummus and Pita
* Veggies and Dip
* Homemade Mac and Cheese
Since the boys share a birthday we try to keep one thing separate and that is the cake! Jackson and Finn every year can pick out their own themed birthday cake. This year Jackson chose a "Police Officer" cake and Finn chose "Curious George". We sang Happy Birthday to each of them and they got a chance to blow out their own candles...they love that! We saved the cake for the adults and the children decorated homemade cupcakes with jimmies, sprinkles and homemade frosting.
As you can guess the kids were WIPED out so we finished the night by a few friends staying for a little after party of Finding Nemo...I can't imagine a better way to end a perfect Birthday. I know in my heart they will remember this party not because of the gifts but because of the memories they made with their friends and family.
