Cleaning With Baking Soda

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Thursday, May 23, 2013, In : Eco-Friendly

Everyone is trying to become more eco-friendly by purchasing earth friendly cleaning products. We are forgetting about one product that we normally use for baking that works wonders on stains, cleaning toys, silverware, countertops, produce, sponges etc.. plus deodorizing refrigerators, gym bags, closets, shoes – the list could go on and on.

Baking Soda is also known as Sodium bicarbonate. It is a chemical compound and its solid white that is crystalline but appears as a fine powder. It...

FUN FRIDAYS – Quality Time

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Friday, May 10, 2013, In : O'Boy! Crafts

I will not spend this weekend with my sons. I am traveling to Florida to be with my mom for Mothers Day. One thing I’ve learned over the last year after finding out my mom has stage 4 lung cancer is that quality time matters….A LOT!

This is also the first Mothers Day that I am really sad that I will not be with my boys for Mothers Day. Say what you want about that statement. My boys are 5 and 7 years old which means for a very long time I’ve been changing dirty diapers, wiping butts...

#MomsNotLovinIt - MCD'S Stop Marketing to My Kid!

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Thursday, May 9, 2013, In : O'Boy! Health and Wellness

Anyone that knows me online and IRL knows that that I don’t feed my kids McDonalds. Not to say they have NEVER eaten there but as a family we try VERY hard to keep our choices as healthy as possible about 99% of the time.

I feel everyone is able to make their own decisions to either eat healthy or not but when fast food companies like McDonalds start marketing directly to children I have a major problem with it. Children are so impressionable. When you throw Ronald McDonald and other chara...

Real Food - Weekly Meal Plan

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Monday, May 6, 2013, In : O'Boy! Food

Just got back from Mom 2.0 Summit yesterday and I have to say I am BEAT! I can hardly keep my eyes open and I have NO IDEA what to plan for this week for my Real Food meal plan. I do know that it's going to be a bit healthier than usual because husband and kids didn't eat very well while I was away. My husband called himself a "train wreak" while I am away. He tries so hard and I appreciate everything he does but he just isn't a multitasker - not many men are, that I know anyway.

So I went t...

Crock Pot ~ Shredded Chicken Tacos

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, In : O'Boy! Food
As you know I love the crock pot, as a busy parent I need to make the most of the little time I have each day to prepare a healthy meal for my family. That means I use the crock pot a few times a week to make my life easier. One of my favorite things to cook in the crock pot is pulled chicken. With pulled chicken you can make BBQ a chicken sandwiches, shredded chicken for  tacos, enchiladas or to use with a casserole.

My meal plan will be short this week, actually just two days. I am traveling to the Mom 2.0 Summit in California on Wednesday morning and will not be home until Sunday. You must think - is she ever home? I have to say not much lately, which has left me very unorganized and a bit frustrated. Any whoo - you don't need to hear me complaining.

Since I will be traveling and my husband will be making dinner for himself and the boys I plan on having 2 VERY healthy meal...

REAL FOOD Meal Planning

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Monday, April 22, 2013, In : O'Boy! Food

Do you ever have a week that works out perfectly? No? me either. It never fails, there is always something that comes up that makes it hard to stick with the real food weekly meal plan. When this happens I don't get upset because I know that I can use those same ingredients the next week, nothing will go to waste. It also saves me money the following week because I don't need to purchase as many items for meals.

Last week the Dijon Mustard Chicken was a favorite of the whole family, it was su...

Asian Lettuce Cups from Steamy Kitchen

Last week wasn't the best for me. I got home VERY late Sunday night from Florida. It seemed like I was trying to play catch up for the rest of the week and meal planning never happened. I finally went to the grocery store on Wednesday evening after noticing that we had no fresh fruit or veggies in the house. Before heading out I made a meal plan for Thursday the 11th through this coming Sunday the 21st. I was very happy to say that I spent $165 dollars a...

Traveling can be challenging when you have a baby especially when you want to give them the best possible foods out there. Traveling can be tricky because foods that you normally give your child may not fare well on the road or can’t be taken on a plane. I hope these ideas inspire you to continue those healthy eating habits while not at home.

The first thing you need to before travel begins is make a meal plan for your baby. When doing this it saves you time, money and is much less stressf...

Gardening - Seasonal Peas

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, In : O'Boy! Gardening

One of the first things you can start planting in the spring is peas. This hardy vegetable is a favorite of adults and children and can be picked and eaten right from the vine. Peas are easy to grow and like a lot of sun, they like about 6 hours of full sun each day....pretty much like most vegetables you grow in your garden. One really cool thing about peas is that they improve the nutrients of the soil that they are growing in. Remember to plant your peas in different areas of your garden ...

I have to say that if I make all of the 7 meals I plan it's been a good week. Things just come up which is OK so I then just save the meal for the next week. What happens in your house when you miss a planned meal? Do you freeze the meat and start a whole new plan for the next week or just roll over the previous week's plan?

Baby Food 101 - Apricots

Apricots is one of my favorite foods to make for babies and even older children. The sweetness of the apricot works well with grains, plain yogurt (for babies over 6 months) chicken for toddlers and above, the possibilities are endless. When blending apricots I choose to use dried organic apricots and re-hydrate them using boiling water. The reason why I do this is because frankly using fresh apricots is a real pain in the a%^! If you have a child I am sure you are hearing them talk about all the things they want under the tree or see them making lists upon lists for Santa. We need to remember that giving is a two – way street, and this is a great time of year to talk to your children about generosity.

Talking about giving can encourage lifelong generosity in kids. You may not know where to do begin the conversation but just remember to avoid language that makes people in need seem different. Instead focus on h...

Rose Romano's Gourmet Sauce Review

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Monday, November 26, 2012, In : O'Boy! Reviews, Giveaways and Contests

Early this fall I was given Rose Romano’s Gourmet Pepper Sauces to review. Rose Romano is a company local to the Philadelphia area I was thrilled to not only try something that was naturally made but also made locally. It’s not certified organic but that doesn’t surprise me because with small start up companies it’s hard to come up with that amazing amounts of cash it takes to become certified organic, but I can say the proof is in the ingredient list (which by the way my 2nd grade...

Cooking With Kids - Homemade Apple Bread

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, In : O'Boy! Kids in the kitchen

I recently had the opportunity to hang out in my son's Montessori preschool/kindergarten class and make some delicious Apple Bread with the class. I think it's so important to be able to share time in your child's class, it's where they spend most of their day and you get a chance to see how they interact with their peers and teachers. Being a teacher myself I know all to well how different children act with their parents vs teachers.

I can honestly say the bread was a HUGE hit, the children...

War Horse on Stage - Get Your Kids to the Theater

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, In : O'Boy! Reviews, Giveaways and Contests

We are excited to see War Horse on stage at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. If you haven’t seen the movie, here is a bit about this amazing tale. War Horse is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship. In England 1914 as World War One begins, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He is soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone. But A...

I was invited by 360PR to join a event at the Reading Terminal in Philadelphia to see a demonstration of the new Ninja Cooking System a few weeks ago, and of course I jumped at the chance to check it out. Not only did I get a chance to meet the crock pot whiz Stephanie O'Dea but I also met the women behind the Ninja Cooking recipes and hang with my fellow Philly Social Mamas!

As soon as I saw the Ninja I was hooked, before I even saw any of the cooking demonstrations. This is so much bette...

Reading Clubs for Kids

I have two creative loving boys that have a love and hate relationship with books. They love books when I am reading them but when asked to read for them, it was like pulling teeth at times. To make reading fun for them creating a Kids Book Club was a way to make reading fun and also helped us keep the conversation flowing between parents and kids.

My inspiration to create a book club was from seeing the reading process at their school. The reading program at The Walden School was devel...

If you talk to anyone that knows me personally they can tell you that I am one overextended mommy. Just ask my husband, he will not be shy about it. I went from a mom teaching Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten living in South Florida to now living in Philadelphia managing my own business, running Social Media for two companies and teaching part time. Oh Yeah….also running a household of 2 boys ages 5 and 7 years old, a husband, dog and cat. Whew….my life is sometimes a complete mess...

My Mom - A 10 Year breast cancer survivor and battling Lung Cancer - MY INSPIRATION!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of October we celebrate this annual campaign to increase awareness. We all are aware of it but for many our lives get busy and we forget to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages.

I am far to aware of breast cancer as I am sure most of you are too. When I hear of someone getting breast cancer (or any type of cancer)  it doesn't even s...

World Hunger Day - How YOU can make a difference!

Today is World Hunger Day. Did you know that there are over 925 million people go hungry every single day? I think daily of all the waste we contribute to daily by throwing away so much food. The food we are too busy to eat, the food our children turn down and the food amount of food restaurants are piling on our plates. When was the last time you cleared your plate?

What floors me is that we produce enough food but almost a billion people are still going hungry daily. The imbalance of our ...

This is why I feel so strongly about Non GMO’s and Prop 37. Scientists have been aware for years that rice is a major source of dietary arsenic, but the Consumer Reports is leveraging a new study, which found arsenic in a wide range of rice products, to urge the Food and Drug Administration to set limi...

Did you know that 75% of people in the lowest income level own a microwave and that gradually increases to 93% for the highest income level. Out of the percentage how many of those households cook meals in the microwave regularly? Well, let me tell you....that percent that uses a microwave for more than half of their meals is highest with singles at 40% and the lowest in family households at 23%. This doesn't count for all the bottles, baby food, microwave popcorn and warming up leftovers.

Because it is horrible for you and filled with preservatives, artificial ingredients, high fructose corn syrup,  hydrogenated oils and GMO's.  Don’t know what Non GMO is? Well you should!

What is GMO?

GMO is a genetically modified organism and is the result of a lab process of taking genes from one species and inserting them into another in an attempt to get a desired trait or characteristic. In many cases GMO seeds are both a poison and a food. GMO seeds are altered so they become a pesticide.

How can this be?

The FDA allowed GMO’s into the food supply in the early 1990’s without independent testing based what peop...

Beets for Baby Food and Beyond

I grew up picking beets in my aunts garden and eating beets all summer long. I loved them just plain and in salads. One of my favorite ways to cook beets is by roasting them. Peel the skin and cut in large chucks, rub olive oil on them and place in the oven until they are cooked through. Add some fresh rosemary and goat cheese and you are golden! So YUMMY!

I know some people are not Beet lovers, especially children. This is why you need to start them out young with eating Beets. You can roast...

Chicken Empanadas

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Friday, February 17, 2012, In : O'Boy! Food

This is a great weeknight meal that can be doubled and frozen for another meal when you have less time to prepare. Traditionally Empanadas come from South America and can be made with just about anything. You can stuff with vegetables, fish, seafood, ground beef, pork or even both. Since we choose not to eat pork or beef we made ours with ground chicken that we bought from Harvest Local. Another reason I love this meal is because you can easily sneak in some other veggies like grated carrots ...

Roasting Winter Squash

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Tuesday, February 14, 2012, In : O'Boy! Food

This past season I had a massive amount of butternut and acorn squash in my garden. It was my first time ever planting these vegetables and I had no idea how quickly it would spread throughout my garden. I couldn't pick or eat them fast enough.

I decided to make butternut and acorn squash puree and freeze it in 1 cup servings. When doing this, I could save all that gorgeous squash meat and use it throughout the winter in different recipes. I love mixing squash in my pancake, waffle, french to...

Fruit and Nut Balls

When I was in the thick of my New Year Cleanse I noticed these amazing looking snacks that I had to try. I thought not only were these going to be great for me but also for my young boys. We are consistently looking for healthy snack choices for during the day and after school.

Another reason why I loved these little Fruit and Nut Balls is because it was a fast and easy recipe that my son could help me with. You could also add pretty much any dried fruit or nuts of your choice. Here is t...

Crock Pot Homemade Yogurt

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, In : O'Boy! Food

Making my own yogurt has been on my to do list for ages...well I finally tackled it last week and it was one of the easiest things to make. You need just 3 things....Milk, Plain Yogurt and a Crock Pot. I've heard of people using the stove top and also yogurt makers, but when I heard about using a crock Pot I was SOLD!

I have to warn you...don't start this process late at night. I started cooking mine at 7PM and I had to get up and 12:30 to put in the plain yogurt. It takes a VERY LONG TIME fo...

The Cleanse - it's over!

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Monday, January 23, 2012, In : O'Boy! Health and Wellness

Well I made it...through all 21 days of it. I can't say I didn't have a few mishaps with some really good Philippine food or a slice of pizza, but all and all I think I did really well. Still off the coffee, actually really LOVING tea. Do you have any suggestions of good herbal teas? I had my first drink of 2012 on Friday and I couldn't believe how giddy I got after 2 drinks. I guess that is what happens after you clean yourself out.

I feel great, I lost weight..not sure how much because I do...

Berry-Banana Baked Oatmeal

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Saturday, January 21, 2012, In : O'Boy! Food
Oatmeal is a BIG hit with our family, it's our go 2 breakfast option. Awhile back I wanted to switch it up a bit and I saw a recipe in Whole Living and then changed it a bit to make it my own. I was able to freeze the leftovers and heat it up using a saucepan and a bit of milk and it was perfect.

Today is the first "real" snow of the season and I thought Baked Oatmeal would be a perfect start to our day. As it bakes in the oven the smell filled the house with this amazing smell of fruit and su...

Cooking with Kids

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Friday, January 13, 2012, In : O'Boy! Kids in the kitchen

One way to get those little picky eaters to eat healthier is having them help in the kitchen. So when you have a little extra time, spend time with your kiddos stirring up your (and their) favorite dishes. Once they feel "ownership" in the meal they are more apt to eat it or at least TRY it! Baby steps right?? Just remember, your kitchen might be a bit messier and it may take you a bit longer but think of how much fun your children will have! I know you may think that it’s just quick...

The Cleanse - Week 2

Well I made it through week 1 with flying colors! As most of you know my husband and I had a date night on Friday. Went to a great Mexican Restaurant and then off to Hair the Musical. I thought for sure I would be tempted a little, maybe take a sip of a margarita or even have a margarita...Nope didn't touch it. Then Saturday we had family over and I thought maybe one glass of wine but when the time came I just chose to say no.

Cleansing - It's a GOOD Thing!

I am on my fifth day of the Whole Living Cleanse. I have to say it’s not as bad as I thought; one of the reasons being is that I am eating REAL foods and not taking some wacky pills or eating some crazy diet. The foods I can eat are very restricted right now but I think it’s a good thing…my body needed a good cleaning out. The experts say that everyone should do some sort of cleanse for 3-4 days a few times a year so that their di...

I know, I know...everyone is doing it, a cleanse I mean.  The holidays are over and as we put on our too tight pants we say to ourselves...I need to do something about this! I omit it, I am one of those people that have too tight pants, and it stinks! People may think since I am "O'Boy! Organic" that I don't partake in eating sweets or rich foods. Even though I make my sweets and rich foods from scratch doesn't mean they are healthiest thing on the planet. I do feel better about making those...

Holiday Menu Planning

I am in full holiday mode. Presents are bought, wrapping is being "worked" on and my menu is planned. To beat the rush I went to my local Trader Joes and Farmers Market to purchase everything for Christmas Eve, Christmas morning Brunch and Christmas dinner. I schuduled a time that it wasn't during the morning or evening rush, the stores were next to one another which helped a ton. I also gave myself a break and hired a sitter to come and watch the boys so I could shop in peace.

The Importance of Family Meals

It's hard during normal weeks to find the time to eat as a family. Now that the holiday season are on our heels our nights are getting booked with shopping, holiday programs and parties so family dinners are becoming even harder to make happen in our household.

Since my oldest was about 2 1/2 we made it prordity to have dinner as a family as much as possible. We are unable to have dinner together every night but at least 4-5 nights a week we sit together as a family and eat the same meal. We...

When we start making our gift giving list and I continue to see it grow, I instantly think…SHIT! I have no idea what to get the kid’s teachers, mail carrier, close neighbor friends, co-workers and worst of all ...

It's easy, and good enough for one or you can make them for a crowd on a Sunday for Brunch.

We want to buy in season local organic produce whenever possible but yes it can be much more expensive. I know many of us worry about pesticide exposure but the health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks. I use the  EWG's Shopper's Guide ...

From SEED to PLANT

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Monday, May 16, 2011, In : O'Boy! Gardening

I know I may be a little late with this post but better late than never right? When planting my garden I do about 1/2 plants and 1/2 seeds. I've started some seeds directly outdoors about a month ago; lettuce, spinach, carrots, beans and radishes. I also started seeds indoors; yellow grape tomatoes, heirloom zucchini, long hot peppers, and melons.

I have to say I find it much easier to start from seed when I am planting directly into the ground, planting indoors doesn't give me much luck...

My husband's new favorite meal

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Friday, May 13, 2011, In : O'Boy! Food
Now that Spring has sprung, the weather is nicer, days are longer, tee ball started, garden is being planted and we are just plain BUSY...we have forgotten about dinner! There are nights that I come in look at the clock and it's 6:00pm and nothing is started for dinner. So I start to panic and try and get a fast, healthy dinner on the table within 45 minutes.

Recently I was at Reading Terminal Market and picked up some meats including some turkey hot Italian sausage. I had Nan bread in the fr...

The life of a Mother

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Sunday, May 8, 2011, In : O'Boy! Life and Parenting

My sons...looking at one another for the first time!

A friend sent me this story, unsure if it's fiction or someone's real story but it's a story that I feel all mother's share. Whether you have given birth to daughters or sons, you are now a person not living for yourself but  living for someone else.

I never understood what my mother was feeling all those nights when she couldn't fall asleep until I was home, asking question after question, telling me no when I wanted her to say yes....I a...

A Favorite Earth Day Tradition!

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Friday, April 22, 2011, In : O'Boy! Health and Wellness

I first was introduced to Drear Children of the Earth; A letter from home, in 1994. I was teaching Montessori preschool and kindergarten in Michigan. I had this little boy Andrew in my class, he was so sweet and had the personality that everyone would want. He gave me this book as a end of the year gift, and I just fell in love with it. Year after year I would read this same book to the children in my classes, and every time I would open the book and see Andrew's hand written name in it, I wo...

Cooking with my favorites!

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, In : O'Boy! Kids in the kitchen
This is a lazy week, I am just getting back from a conference that totally kicked my #$&, I am still recovering and my boys are home for Spring Break. My oldest LOVES to cook so I promised him that we would make it a week of cooking. After we got out of bed I headed downstairs to see that he already had bowls out with oatmeal and brown sugar in them...I had to laugh, he is so much like me!

I let him know how much I appreciated him starting breakfast but I thought we could make something toget...

Welcome to Spring with Broccoli

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, In : O'Boy! Food

This Broccoli and Potato mixture is one of my favorite baby meals. It's easy and now that Spring is here you can either grab some broccoli and potatoes from your garden or from the local farmer's market. I also have to say that this makes a fantastic side dish when making roasted chicken.

Broccoli and Potato Mash

Ingredients

 1 small head of broccoli
4 medium to large Yukon gold potatoes
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

With using a metal steamer insert for your pot place a small ...

Homemade Bean Soup

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, In : O'Boy! Food
A few weeks back I started my journey into the world of Ham. I made a pretty delicious baked ham last week for my house guests, everyone LOVED it! Since I am a newbie Ham eater and baker I needed some recipes and I got some great ones from Who Says 8 is enough, table for two and a half, Tabatha Ward, Chef Cili Yack's, Frugal Philly Mom, my mother in law and my own mother. For starters I think I need to buy another ham to try out all these dishes. I am still working on all the recipes and I ho...

A New Addition to our Kitchen

Posted by Lisa Bruder on Monday, April 11, 2011, In : O'Boy! Life and Parenting

Since joining the co-op, picking up foods from The Family Cow and making my own breads I've noticed that my knives are not that great. I realized that I could get at least 3-4 more pieces of bread per loaf if I could just get the slices even and thinner, that couldn't be done with my knives. I've been buying my raw cheeses in bulk so I have to slice it myself, again my knives failed me. Then when I would bake my turkey breast and now Ham then try to slice..again one BIG failure. So I did it, ...

Composting

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Thursday, March 31, 2011, In : O'Boy! Gardening

Since moving to the Philadelphia area and starting our garden about 4 years ago we wanted to compost. I seriously can't believe it's taken us this long to finally get a real compost bin a few weeks back. Now I can't imagine not doing it, composting has become a real family affair around here. My boys know that their banana peels go in our kitchen compost bin and they share the responsibility of taking it out when it's full and placing all of our food scraps in the Compost Bin outside.

Garden Planning

I am seriously loving my new Garden Planner from Mothering Earth News. I just got an email from them today and I now know what plants I can start either under cover or inside for my garden. All I need to do now is go outside and rake, rake and rake some more...I can tell you that I will have blisters on my hands by the end of today.

Plants I can sow under cover or indoors in the next two weeks:

Broccoli
Celery
Parsley
Peppers
Swiss Chard
Tomatoes

Plants I can sow outdoors or plant out over the ne...

O'Boy! Recipe Contest

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Thursday, March 10, 2011, In : O'Boy! Reviews, Giveaways and Contests

My family is venturing into uninhabited waters, we have decided to start eating ham again. If you didn't know we are a poultry and fish eating family. I personally haven't eaten pork or beef since I was about 18 years old. I was a fish-etarian until I got pregnant with our first child and needed to get more iron in my diet so I chose to start getting poultry again.  When I met my husband 13 years ago, he wasn't eating pork or beef either so naturally we kept that way of living.

Recently we we...

Apple Squash Cupcakes with Brown Sugar Frosting

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be a sponsor at the second luncheon for Girls Lunch Out. It was great to see all the women that I chat with online and meet some new friends too. One of the things that I gave away to all the guests that is a one favorite or ours...Apple Squash Cupcakes. These are more like a muffin but when you put a little (healthier) frosting on it, any child would love to have these at their birthday party.

I make these for my boys and freeze them. It's a perfec...

Gardening - Spring Fever

Posted by Lisa Bruder on Monday, February 28, 2011, In : O'Boy! Gardening

I don't know about you but I am experiencing Spring Fever! We have had more than a few nice days in the Philly area these last few weeks, and yesterday as I came down to unlock the door in the morning and open it up to see the sun beaming I noticed my front porch. The slate was dirty, pine needles still hanging around from the Christmas tree and sad to say, my roping and lights were still hanging on the iron banisters. So without getting out of my PJ's I grabbed the broom and scissors and sta...

Marshmallow Sculptures

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, In : O'Boy! Crafts

With another snowy day upon us, I and the kids were going a bit crazy! They were in the pantry every 15 minutes begging for a snack acting as if I haven't fed them in a week or running like crazies throughout the house. So I decided to bring out the big guns....Marshmallows! Yes, Marshmallows...you may wonder why I would give my children sugar at 10am in the morning and for a minute I was beginning to wonder too. So instead of letting them shove them in their mouths they did something a bit m...

Raw Kefir Banana Smoothie

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, In : O'Boy! Food
When you have mornings that you are running behind it's easy to just pass by breakfast or give your children something not that healthy. When you have only a short amount of time in the morning try making a smoothie to take on the go.

This is the easiest smoothie I've made and one. Since I've started using the Family Cow to purchase my milk, eggs, some meat and other items I noticed that they also sell raw Kefir. I've used regular Kefir in the past but never raw, and I love all the benefits o...

Valentines with helping hands

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Monday, February 14, 2011, In : O'Boy! Crafts

In my latest Newsletter I mentioned that I saw this great post by Philly Burb Moms about homemade Valentines. There were a lot of great ideas but one that stood out for me was the crayon making activity. I loved it because you were reusing old crayons to make new ones, both of my boys could help with every aspect of the project and they felt ownership of their own Valentines.

My oldest and I went shopping for all the materials at JoAnn's so he picked out the color paper we used for the tags, ...

Homemade Hot Chocolate

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, In : O'Boy! Food

As a child the thing I enjoyed most after playing in the snow was coming inside and enjoying a nice cup of Hot Chocolate...not much as changed since then. I still LOVE a nice cup of Hot Chocolate and so do my kids. One of things that I have noticed is all the unwanted ingredients in those famous hot chocolate packs that I once loved. Sure they are easy and inexpensive but if I am going to serve myself and my kids something sweet why not know exactly what's in it. In the beginning I thought, I...

Babies are Batty for Beets!

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, In : O'Boy! Baby Food

I think Beets are one of those foods that you either LOVE or HATE, I happen to be in the LOVE category. When I was a child spending summers on my Uncle's farm in Michigan I would help my Aunt and Grandmother harvest all the veggies. Beets were one of the veggies I loved the most, I know that seems a bit weird but it's true.

As an adult I began roasting beets with red onion which is perfect with a salad. You can even saute the greens and use them as the salad greens and mix in a little bit o...

Newbie Bread Maker

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Thursday, January 13, 2011, In : O'Boy! Food
In my endless journey of making our lives more about eating Whole Foods, I've decided to start making my own bread. It's something I've wanted to do for awhile now but to be honest I was a bit intimidated by the whole process. All the women in my family throughout the years made bread. I always wondered why they stopped? I guess it's because it was more convenient to buy a loaf of bread then make one. If only they would of remembered that when making your own bread you use about 5 or so ingre...

Winter Veggies for Babies

I've been working on a Personal Baby Chef Service for a new client. One of the things that the mommies love is that they can either choose from the menu or even personalize their selections to meet the needs of their baby. You can't get that kind of service in a jar!

One of the selections that my new client made was Winter Veggies with Mixed Grains. This has been a favorite of babies and parents. It's a complete meal that you can feed your baby that is a bit older from 8 months and up. This c...

To get myself back on a schedule, more organized and balanced with life and work I made a dinner menu for the week. I did this last night on Dinner Tool. I've always tried to make dinner menus for the week. I find that they not only keep you organized but it also saves you money at the grocery store.  You are only buying what you need and you look in your pantry, freezer and fridge to see that you already have to make meals from. So I really thought I was on the right track since I already ha...

How a Deep Freezer saved my marriage

Posted by Trina O'Boyle on Thursday, December 30, 2010, In : O'Boy! Life and Parenting
I've been wanting a deep freezer for along time now and I finally got one from Santa  husband this year. My husband felt bad because it wasn't something "just for me" but I was  beyond THRILLED, it's amazing how things like a deep freezer gets me excited. I did get some other things like pieces of Stella Dot jewelry that I've been eying up for awhile, thank god my hubby has a sister that he can go to for advice. LOL

So the freezer was picked up today and we set it up. I started going throug...

Sugar Cookie Making with Kids

I love to bake but never really got into making sugar cookies until recently. It's something fun to do with my boys and I got these fantastic cookie cutters this year that I just had to use.

On Christmas eve we were busy in the kitchen, the kids have a small table that I brought in for them to sit at so they had their own space. It was perfect because I could be at the counter rolling dough and they could roll out their own dough and do their own cut outs. Finn just played with it like play-d...
